2019 TAVY13 A HUGE SUCCESS DESPITE LAST MINUTE ROAD ACCIDENT DELAYS START
Around a thousand runners took part in this year’s Tavy13 race. Sponsored jointly by Mansbridge Balment and our friends at Hansford Bell, Tavistock Athletics Club did a fantastic logistics job to organise this wonderful event, which takes runners on a scenic course out and around the town. Not only were elite and fun runners tacking the 13 mile course, they were joined by around 400 primary school children taking part in the Primary Schools Challenge whereby they run a mile a week for twelve weeks, concluding their own half marathon by completing their final mile on the day of the senior race.
Just as race organiser, Martin Exley-Deane, was about to start the main race, news came through that a traffic accident on the eastern edge of the town had closed the road and it was unsafe for runners to follow the route past the scene at that time. The decision was taken to delay the start of the main race for one hour, allowing the accident to be cleared and the race to safely go ahead. In the meantime, the children’s runs were concluded. An hour later, all was good to go and it took Tavistock runner Ben Neale just 1hr 15mins and 6 seconds to complete the course. This was a personal best for Ben, who is a great supporter of both the Tavy13 and Tavy7 races. Rachael Malthouse, another local runner, took the ladies’ title in a superb time of 1hr 30mins and 9 seconds.

We look forward to the Tavy7, which takes place on 27th October, for which entries are already coming in.
